Email Newsletter Ideas
by S. Saminaden
Once you’ve started writing e-newsletters as part of your email marketing efforts, the challenge of finding ideas for your articles can be daunting. In addition to trying to keep a regular schedule, you want ideas and topics that are original, fresh and interesting, something your subscribers will read and enjoy.
To get your creative writing juices flowing, the following tips should help.
- Keep a list of newsletter ideas – If you plan
to release your e-newsletter on a regular basis, coming up with new ideas
when you’re ready to write is tough.
Keeping a list of article ideas is very helpful. Whenever you have an idea, add it to your list. That way when the time comes to write your newsletter, at least you’ll have something to work with.
Some sources:
- Read other e-newsletters – Find inspiration from other people’s work. Subscribe to other email newsletters in your field, even ones from your competitors. Industry publications are not only a great source of ideas, you can provide your own opinions in the newsletter.
Just remember: don’t steal content. Passing off someone else’s work as your own not only shows a lack of originality on your part, it is also a violation of copyright laws.
- Recycle your ideas – Use content from other parts of your business, especially if its unlikely your newsletter readers have ever seen it.
- Ask your readers for suggestions – Invite your
readers to either contribute ideas or content for your email newsletter.
Have them submit questions as well, and you can answer one of them in each
issue. Some of your readers will appreciate the chance to get involved.
- Look towards the future – What does the future hold for your industry or field? Write an article about it, then sometime later write a follow-up examining whether or not you were right.
- Develop a consistent format – You don’t
want to have a lenghty HTML email one month, and a 5-paragraph text email
the next. Using a newsletter template will give your e-newsletter a consistent
look. Developing a consistent format will also help determine what you
want your email newsletter to achieve.
- Write your email newsletter in stages – Committing
a little bit of time here and there can make the challenging task of writing
more manageable. Get a rough draft done first, and then come back to your
newsletter a few days later. A fresh perspective and new ideas can help
improve what you’re already written.
- Plan your newsletter issues in advance – Having
your newsletter contents planned out, with the help of your ideas list,
will save a lot of time and stress. Planning your newsletter releases also
gives you time to gather material for your writing.
Writing an email
newsletter is a great opportunity to showcase your online business. By
sharing your ideas and expertise, you build credibility as an expert, while
spreading the word about your products and services.
