SEO - Keyword Density

Percentage of times a keyword is repeated compared to the total number of words in the web page.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is used by SEO experts to enhance the visibility of a website on the search engines. Keywords or keyword phrases are usually used within the content of the website. Whether or not a web page is relevant to a specific keyword or phrase, it is determined by the number of times the keyword phrase or keyword appears in the content of the site. The percentage of times the keyword is repeated compared to the total number of words in the web page is called keyword density.

Keyword density became a part of SEO when it was discovered that the ranking of websites by search engines is influenced by the keyword density. SEO experts have since been using keywords and keyword phrases to enhance web page visibility. However, in an attempt to achieve top ranking web developers and SEO experts overused keywords and keyword phrases. This resulted in what is known as keyword stuffing. Today, web pages that are found overstuffing are penalized by the search engines.

Some SEO experts have suggest the keyword density ranging between 5 and 10 percent is optimum for SEO purposes. Any density higher than 10% may be considered search spam. Search engines search for keyword stuffing and mark these pages as search spam. If your web page is considered search spam; it may be removed from the search engine's index which negating all your SEO efforts.

Determining the appropriate keyword density for the SEO of your web page is quite simple. Take for example a web page with 300 words. If you intend to ensure that this page conforms to SEO rules and has maximum visibility for a certain keyword or keyword phrase, you will probably aim for a keyword density of 5%. This means that the keyword will make up to 5% of total content of the web page. Therefore the keyword or keyword phrase can only be repeated 15 times
(i.e. 5% of 300 = 15).

It is important not to give into the temptation of overstuffing your web page with keywords as it is bound to impact the SEO strategy negatively.
